The decision of when to use 1D
bar codes
and
when to use 2D bar codes
.
How does the size compares with 1D(code 128) and 2D (Data
Matrix). 1D bar codes get longer as the content of the bar
code increase. 2D Bar Code get bigger as a square.
In general, use 1D bar codes when the situation allows.
Reasons include
- Lower cost scanning (~$150 more for handheld scanners)
- More existing scanner available
Use 2D barcodes when available space is too limited for 1D
bar codes.
Other considerations:
- Avoid using too fine bar codes (often measured in mils)
> 10 mils is good. 5-10 will work with some handle
scans but < 20% of the available scanners.
- Use 300 DPI printers if 2D bar code are going to be used
or considered in the future.
What makes Laboratory needs different the other industries
and operations:
- Laboratories use 2D bar codes for spaces
- Other industries use 2D bar code to carry paragraphs of
data versus single words in the label.
